The score tested against blood measurements
The direct Prysm iO validation study compared fingertip scores with blood carotenoids measured by laboratory chromatography. The reported R² was 0.7659.
Internal support with measurable changes
A 12 week randomised trial compared a multivitamin with placebo. Skin carotenoid measurements increased by 42% using Raman scanning and 41% using hyperspectral absorption scanning in the supplementation group. The paper also examined blood nutrients and questionnaire outcomes.
What the combined blood comparison research shows
A meta analysis brought together 15 studies and 1,155 participants. The pooled correlation between Raman skin measurements and blood carotenoids was r = 0.68, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.61 to 0.74.
A body of evidence for measuring dietary change
A systematic review examined 29 articles assessing optical skin carotenoid measurements against blood carotenoids or fruit and vegetable intake. It brings together the evidence across several measurement methods.
Dietary changes measured in a controlled trial
A six week feeding trial used a Veggie Meter to measure responses to different amounts of carotenoid rich juice. The higher dose produced increases in both skin and blood carotenoid measurements, demonstrating that dietary change can be followed objectively.
The established science behind skin carotenoid scanning
This review explains the development of Raman skin carotenoid measurement, including reproducibility, comparisons with laboratory measurements and links with dietary intake.
Skin carotenoids and structural skin measurements
A supplementation study followed skin carotenoids and a collagen I to elastin index over five and ten months. The researchers assessed structural skin measurements alongside skin carotenoid levels.
Carotenoid status and wider health markers
In 811 adults, researchers examined skin carotenoids, blood carotenoids, vegetable intake and metabolic markers. This observational study explores the relationship between carotenoid status and metabolic health markers.
